Insurance Coverage

Shane is currently a provider on the following insurance panels:

  • Blue Cross/Blue Shield
  • United Health Care
  • Aetna Cigna

Due to the many problems I have experienced over the years dealing with insurance companies, I no longer accept the insurance payment schedule nor do I bill the insurance company for clients. I collect payment in full from the client at the time of service. If the client wishes to get reimbursement for counseling services, the client is responsible to submit claims or invoices to their insurance company for reimbursement. I can provide paperwork and general instructions for billing your insurance. Most insurance companies do not pay for sexual addiction treatment. Insurance companies require that the clinician providing service diagnose the client with a diagnosis that meets “medical necessity.”

After 15 years of billing health insurance for mental health services, my experience teaches me the following: counseling services are typically only reimbursed at 40-60% of fair market price for therapy; employers and/or insurance companies in order to manage care and cut costs typically assess large deductibles, require strict and tedious tasks for authorization and payment for services, and regularly deny payment for trivial matters.  In short, it can take hours of work and months of waiting to receive nominal reimbursement.  It is due to these challenging experiences that I cannot accept insurance and stay financially viable.

I can provide you with a statement listing session attendance and payment, which you might be able to submit to the following:

Your insurance company for reimbursement. As every policy is different, please contact your provider.

Your MSA (medical savings account). Please contact your benefits manager for verification.

MSN Money recently posted an article addressing the hazards of using health insurance to pay for mental health treatment. You can read this article HERE

Here are some advantages to paying out-of-pocket for your therapy sessions:

The number of sessions is not limited.

Improved confidentiality.  When you use your health insurance, the insurance company's case manager reviews your claims and has access to your clinical information, which can be distributed or accessed by future entities seeking your health care history.

Tax deductions:  Some clients have been able to receive deductions for costs incurred for counseling.  Consult with your tax advisor for a possible tax deduction.

Clients who pay for their counseling typically take it more seriously and consequently benefit more.
